TengoInternet Encourages Good Neighbor Policy To Reduce Wi-Fi Interference
Leading Wi-Fi provider stresses education
AUSTIN, TX – December 12, 2007 – TengoInternet, the oldest and
largest wireless Internet service provider for the outdoor hospitality industry,
today announced a policy to encourage Wi-Fi users to cooperate for the
common goal of connectivity.
Many travelers introduce personal Wi-Fi equipment into campgrounds with
existing Wi-Fi networks that interferes with the campground's Wi-Fi services.
Since the 2.4 GHz spectrum on which Wi-Fi operates is unlicensed, there is
little legal recourse and much potential frustration. However, TengoInternet
believes multiple Wi-Fi networks can co-exist in harmony if everyone follows
a basic rule.
TengoInternet provides handouts and staff training that ask campground
guests to avoid configuring and operating personal Wi-Fi equipment in the
channels used by the TengoInternet networks to avoid interfering with other
guests' access to the network. Dubbed the "good neighbor policy," a guest
operating a personal Wi-Fi network in an area where a host network exists
should inquire at the office to understand which channels are available for
personal use. Wi-Fi networks typically select one or two radio frequency
channels between 1 and 11.
"Our locations provide Wi-Fi access to their guests as a shared amenity,"
said Marty Heaner, VP/CTO and Co-Founder, TengoInternet. "Most often,
guests with their own Wi-Fi equipment unknowingly set up a personal Wi-Fi
network that creates interference for all the neighbors. We want to educate
campgrounds and their guests about the importance in knowing which radio
channels are available for personal use so guests can be good wireless
neighbors, too."
